Nepenthes mirabilis var. globosa, BE-3928
Though Nepenthes mirabilis may be the most widespread of all Nepenthes species, Nepenthes mirabilis var. globosa and Nepenthes orbiculata are limited to just a small area in Thailand. Locally known amongst Thai growers as “Viking” form many years, these plants produce really cool looking, globose pitchers that are quite variable in color (green, white, red, pink are all possible in any combination of pitcher body and peristome). They are best grown in lowland conditions but will also grow well as intermediates for a few months.
Recently, plants from the Phang Nga province were elevated to species status as Nepenthes orbiculata while plants from the Trang province are still regarded as Nepenthes mirabilis var. globosa. The distinction between the 2 populations is difficult to make but seems to be closely tied to the introgession with Nepenthes mirabilis in the Trang site leads plants there to sometimes have a lower pitcher waist and more climbing growth habit. Whereas, Nepenthes orbiculata seems is on average more globose and has a more bushy growth habit. Since we are unsure of the origin of this clone from BE, we're listing it as Nepenthes mirabilis var. globosa until they update us but it is an outstanding clone with deep red coloration. The photos are from large plants of the same clone for sale.
