Sarracenia purpurea is a beautiful American Pitcher Plants renown for its compact form and showy colors. It's tolerant of lower light levels than other Sarracenia and would make a good candidate for a bright windowsill. The species purpurea is divided into 2 subspecies. Subspecies purpurea grows from the mid Atlantic all the way into Canada while subspecies venosa is prevalent in the southern range down into Georgia.
Sarracenia, also known as American Pitcher Plants, grow in boggy, open savannas in the southeastern United States. For many years, misinformation spread that carnivorous plants were hard to grow or required very stringent horticultural requirements. Fortunately, this couldn’t be farther from the truth! American Pitcher Plants are hardy temperate plants capable of being grown outdoors in nearly every state in the USA (some winter accommodation may be required for harsh northern winters and for desert summers). Our plants grow outside in the burning Texas sun year round and have even taken cold fronts down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter with no ill effects.
